Wait Times, A Mental Health Question For Jagmeet Singh

Wait times: A Mental Health Question For Jagmeet Singh

Yesterday, I had the great honour of meeting the federal NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh at a town hall in Halifax, Nova Scotia. While there, I was allowed to ask him what he planned to do to alleviate the long wait times in mental health. I also pointed out that Canada has a two-tiered public system, general health and mental health. There are the private mental health sector, psychological services and the public system. A system that has been met with cuts all across this country.

I could feel a sense of hope in the crowd as we waited for Mr. Singh to arrive. Canadians fears are running high in this age of uncertainty. This was the first time I had ever attended such an event, I was happy just to be a part of all the positive energy that premeditated throughout the room. Although it was tough for my anxiety and my PTSD symptoms we engaged, I have no regrets.

His arrival was meet buy a standing ovation from a crowd made up from all walks of life; from young students, concerned about climate change to retirees, concerned about health care, and everything in between. As someone with mental illness, I was glad to be in a room full of people who supported the plight of everyone there. It felt comfortable, safe.

Mr. Singh's answer to my question was one that highlighted equal access for all Canadians in all areas of health, he wants to restore funding to the health care budget, a budget that was once a 50/50 cost share between the provinces and Ottawa, is now down to 25% from the feds, leaving the provinces to make up for the rest. Restoring this funding can help shave wait times for those suffering from a mental health condition and do more to assist those with a mental health emergency. As he put it; "Health coverage should be head to toe".

Watch me ask Mr. Singh about wait times in the mental health care system.

I am so fortunate to have heard so many people's mental health stories, they gave me the strength to ask him what he was planning to do for the mental health care system. I am happy that mental health is finally on the radar of a political party and so grateful that I was allowed to ask about wait times. A genuine guy with the everyday sufferer in mind.
